The one that got away

There's a phrase in fishing parlance - 'The one that got away'.

It signifies the fish that was never caught. The peculiarity of this particular fish is that as time goes by and the story is passed down and repeated, the fish steadily becomes a bigger prize catch. I guess there's no lying or subterfuge in this. It's just that the human mind tends to dwell on all the things that could have been. And in the process, tends to continually exaggerate the goodness of lost things.

Another aspect to this whole thing is that there is absolutely no possibility of verifying the claim of how big the fish that got away was. What would have happened if that fish was caught? Would it have been really that much of a prize catch? There would always be somebody else catching a bigger, better fish. That's the real problem. The one that doesn't get away is always subject to comparisons and dissatisfactions. While the one that does is absolute and pristine in all ways.

I feel that a career as an airline pilot or a filmmaker is my 'one that got away' fish. I might have sucked at both. Maybe I am doing what I can do best. But this fish that got away from my life will forever swim in the fishbowl of my skull.

And that's a lesson in human nature to all of us.

Life in a Metro

3 bombs blasted in Mumbai yesterday.

Thankfully it stopped at three. Only 17 people died. It could have been worse. To honestly analyse how I'm feeling about it - it is relief.

Why relief? Obviously because the casualties and the damages have been much smaller than what Mumbai has earlier been subjected to. But is relief the right emotion to feel? Actually, given the circumstances, one can't feel any other way.

Going by Facebook status updates, tweets, blogs and SMSes, there is a lot of anger and resentment that everyone is feeling. People are angry about everyone talking about Mumbai's resilient spirit. News channels are going on stridently about statements from government officials, police, home ministry, etc. urging people to stay calm and not believe in or spread rumours.

What really is the point of feeling resentment and anger? It doesn't last more than 48 hours anyway. Life just goes on. People are struggling with their everyday mundane struggles. No one can afford to even stop and feel sad about the state of the city. The fact remains that no one I know actually got hurt. And the number of people dead is less than people dying every hour on a normal day on the streets of Mumbai.

Terror attacks, just like unanswerable questions are a part and parcel of life in a city like ours. The only way out is to live in denial. Just have faith that when you leave your home every morning, you will return. Every day will end just like the previous day did - with all the unfinished work that has to be done the next day. Keep moving from one day to the next as if you will live for ever. That's the only solution.

I am sure the 17 people who died yesterday and their families would have also felt the same. Here's sparing a moment to convey my respect to those souls. But life must and does go on.

The absolutely unedited, uncorrected version of the first story and film script ever written by Amun, age 11

Black screen, slight sound of footsteps, rain pouring down heavily, slowly camera fades in and shows us a door with a peephole, beside it are some keys hung onto a key holder. Ting dong- no one arrives to open the door then after 5 seconds or so a thin, fair lady wearing a blue dress comes and opens the door. A boy enters whose only shoes are shown. He inserts his thumb inside the shoe, plucks it out, and throws it in the darkness of the shoe cabinet. The boy runs to the sofa and throws his bag down, (showing only his body) calls out to his maid and tells her to get his food, politely. The same lady comes inside the room with a tray in her hand, which consists of a big bowl of rice, a small bowl of omelet and a glass of water. She lays it down. I get up and switch the TV on. Then soon I finished my food, drank water, gave the tray to my didi (maid) and started to study. When I had finished my studies in about an hour, I started to listen to music from my IPod, which was connected to a speaker. It was two by the time I finished with music. Then suddenly my door bell rang. My didi looked through the peephole and called me to the door to ask me that if I knew this guy. I looked through the peep hole and saw that he was a strange looking guy. He would check his shoes and would ring the bell in every two seconds. Then out of irritation I yelled out and asked him his name and whom he wanted. Then I told him to stop ringing the bell again and again. (Hoof) This guy was irritating. While he was outside.

Does Smita Khot live here?

Yes. But she is not at home right now.

Doesn’t matter I can wait.

I let him in. He was walking very casually as if it was his house. Showed his back to the sofa in the pooja and crash landed on it like he wanted to break his back and the sofa. I asked him his name and he said it was Nikhil. (V.O)  “what kind of a guy is he. Does mom know about this guy”, and then after those last few words I said a thought struck me in my head. (V.O) “WHAT!!! I forgot to ask mom that does she know him. I stepped in my room and picked up my telephone. Dialed her number (beep boop)(VO- tring tring, click and the phone is picked up)

Mom, there is this guy at home called Nikhil, do you know him?

Ummm, no I don’t.

(Scared) then why did he say that he knew you? I’m scared!

Ok calm down, I’m coming as soon as possible, and try to act normally don’t let him feel curious.

Then I felt a bit relaxed. ( sigh ) My didi said she had reported to him that my mom was going to come late at night. Then I myself went and took a look upon him and saw that he was a bit tensed about my mom as he made a weird face and when he saw me he got up and walked towards me with a wrecked face. I walked a step behind and he took a quick step, I closed my eyes with both my hands in front of me trying to cover myself (cam on boy and screen fades) After about 2 seconds I saw that I was unharmed and opened my eyes seeing both hands in front of me when I removed them I saw a face looking at me staring in a polite way for a change, then he asked me that where the bathroom was I giggled. Then the camera was on the closed bathroom door. Then there was a sound of someone peeing and then a flush. Then he came out pulling his zip. (V.O) ugh… what kind of a man is he? I walked back to my room and started to read a book labeled ARTEMIS FOWL. (Fade out by looking on the outer window as he was sitting in his window seat (Ting tong in the darkness) (Fade in on the door) maid running in with a sweaty face, and a dupatta tied across the neck to the waist and around it. Cam on the face of the maid. She gives a slight smile. (Conversation sight) the mother is shown. She is a tall stout, golden haired, looking aunty wearing a purple dress. She says to the maid that to call me, in the ears. She walks obediently and calls me to the hall without a single whisper, as she was told and only by actions. She also told the maid to get a knife in case there is an emergency. Mom was the head, she was like the leader whatever she did me and didi did. Like she lifted her hand and we did too. (James bond tune and the ta-da tune on the part where mom stops and picks her hand up with a jerk)  When she reached the room, she took a glance on the guy and when she saw his face she was so relieved that it was no one but her school friend. She blew into the room with a remark, “Nikhil, so long!” with a happy face she walked towards him and he too gave a smile for the second time in his life I guess. Mom looked behind at me to give me the knife and I took it and gave it to didi who was behind me. She kept it in the kitchen. Mom laughed and asked me that was I talking about NIKHIL, this Nikhil? I said yes. She lolled and said that this was a school friend of hers. And she recognized him by the face and also that she was sorry. She said she had not known which “Nikhil” I was talking about and said they are meeting after almost thirty years! They burst into a conversation, it started like this.

How come you’re in Mumbai?

Oh, I wanted to give you a surprise that I was shifting into Mumbai.

Oh that’s wonderful! How come?

My Delhi house was becoming old and dusty so I gave it for rent.

Oh please come over anytime from now on, on a Sunday.

Yeah I’d try.

The chatted for long hours. And while I was thinking about today’s day, I remembered that during this complication I totally forgot about my HW.(what happened exactly was that I was sitting in my usual seat and was thinking and suddenly a thought struck me and when I was rubbing my chin I covered my mouth and said in my head that I had not done my HW.)

Screen fades as I say bye to the screen and I start working but the screen has not still stopped so while he sees that the screen is still on he says bye, walks to the screen and covers it.
